World’s largest car carrier delivered in China with 10,800 CEU capacity
China has delivered the world’s largest car carrier, marking a new milestone in global automotive shipping capacity and shipbuilding capabilities.
The vessel, named Glovis Leader, has a capacity of 10,800 car equivalent units (CEU). It was built by Guangzhou Shipyard International under China State Shipbuilding Corporation and delivered in Guangzhou.
The ship will be owned by HMM and operated by Hyundai Glovis.
Glovis Leader measures 230 metres in length and 40 metres in width. It has a design draft of 10.5 metres and a cruising speed of 19 knots. The vessel features 14 vehicle decks and can carry electric vehicles, hydrogen-powered cars and heavy trucks.
The ship is powered by a dual-fuel engine using LNG and conventional fuel. It meets IMO Tier III emissions standards and includes energy-saving technologies such as an optimized hull design, waste heat recovery and shore power capability.
A shaft generator allows the vessel to produce electricity while sailing, reducing fuel consumption.
“This vessel is expected to set a new benchmark for global automobile transport,” said Lee Kyoo-bok, CEO of Hyundai Glovis.
The delivery highlights China’s growing strength in high-end shipbuilding. Chinese shipyards have recently delivered several record-breaking car carriers, reflecting strong global demand for vehicle transport capacity.
Industry observers say the trend also supports the shift toward more efficient and lower-emission shipping solutions.
